She traces the priest's brow with bare
finger. She is unmasked, ungoggled.
His eyes reflect the heat of her smile.

Drill reverberates inside his skull
like an air wrench in perpetual sneeze
twisting lugnuts on the verge of a scream.

She shifts her palm, cups
his cheek. He cannot speak
but his eyes soften their gaze

as his blood spatters her blouse.
A few drops stray onto her face -- one
hits the corner of her eye.

She rubs watering white
with the back of her hand,
ignorant of the disease it carries.
